The codex alera books get better as they go along, the charectors grow and become more complex as does the storyline. There is plenty of action but not so much of the full scale warfare (though there is that) as the 3rd book but more intimate fights like ambushes and duels etc. its more about trying to achieve missions then defending a set location which is a bit of a theme throughout the series. i read this book in one sitting (making me miss a lecture) and would read it again
