– Customer review on 14/11/2008 Modesitt continues to inject new life into his Recluse Saga, this time delving into the formally mysterious continent of Hamor. In this place, we learn that all magic is state controlled, and exercised for the good of the empire. There is plenty of action, an enjoyable storyline, and as usual the quality of the actual writing is superb. There are a few too many plot links that are left for the second book, for my tastes, but that would be my only complaint.
Although the story he tells, and the underlying messages he gives, will be familiar to all fans of Modesitt's books, he still manages to tell the story in a fresh and enjoyable way. It is worth a read to true fans, and a good read for someone new to Modesitt, as it stands on its own very well, but to those who have become somewhat jaded with the Modesitt philosophy, it may be just a bit too much of the same.
