Silverthorn is the second book in the Riftwar saga, and follows events after the first book, 'Magician'. Pug is back, foul deeds are afoot, and things are not going smoothly for the new prince of Krondor. Raymond E Feist is an awesome author, whose works are classically fantasy, and not to be missed by those who love the Fantasy genre. Go back and read Magician first though, before moving on to this one.
After reading the first two installments a year ago, I finally decided to finish off the riftwar saga. Some people will be slightly dissappointed with this book, due to the difference in the climax of events within the story and the characters that are met. On the other hand others may enjoy this one just as much as the first two because it specializes in a few key topics that are not grasped so much within the first book. Magic being major, with fragments of elements that are discovered within the deep past. Personally, after reading this I will go on to the conclusion as it pretty much is the first half of the second half of the series that will be completed with the next book. It is not a necessary book but I think it is worth a look at if you are a huge fan of the world of the Magician.
A great follow-up to the fantastic 'Magician'. These characters will pull you in as you get involved in their struggles and difficulties. The brooding Prince Arutha this time seeks a cure for his betrothed, who has been poisoned. One of those books that you just can't put down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable adventure/fantasy book, including those who don't generally read books in this genre.
Buy, rent, steal, whatever you have to do to get a copy of this book, do it! The third installment of Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga, Silverthorn is by far the best. If you like a fast-paced, finely constructed plot with excellent characterizations, this is your book! Usually I don't recommend reading novels in a series out of sequence, but I'll make an exception in this case. I bought Silvertorn used and was so impressed that I hunted down the other three books ( 1. Magician: Apprentice; 2. Magician: Master and 4. A Darkness at Sethanon-all that were out at the time) and devoured them as well. The concept of this series revolves around a Medieval European-type kingdom known as the Kingdom of Isles, on a world known as Midkemia, that is invaded by armies from a distant world known as Kelewan ( sort of a cross between Medieval Japan and the Aztec Empire ), through a magical rift created by magicians on Kelewan. The series centers around the adventures of the young lads Pug and Thomas, of Castle Crydee and their adventures during the Riftwar and their subsequent fortunes. ( The mysterious wizard Macros the Black, featured throughout the series is an interesting character ). Books three and four are set at the close of the Riftwar and involve a sort of sub-plot Feist keeps running throughout the series involving the Elves and their lost cousins, the dark elven Moredhel. The main character in Silverthorn is Prince Arutha of the Kingdom city of Krondor, whose lovely wife Anita is struck down by the posion arrow of assassins; the novel involves Arutha's quest for the mystical herb, Silverthorn, that can heal his bride. Joining the Prince on his quest are some very well-written characters (who recur in most of the later books ). On the journey we meet the young Jimmy the Hand, a thief in Krondor's thieves guild, The Mockers, their secretive, mysterious leader the Upright man, the evil undead assassins, the Black Slayers, pirate captain Amos Trask, Baru, the Hadati Hillman, and others. Feist gives us some masterful characterizations, paricularly the thief Jimmy the Hand. Not only the characters but the worlds themselves are finely crafted; the thieve's guild of Krondor is superbly crafted; this is what a thieves guild should look like! You could roleplay a great campaign out of Krondor itself. I was literally not able to put down this book! If they ever make a roleplaying game based on Midkemia I'd buy it in two seconds! Hint, Hint, know what I mean, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more, wink, wink. So, get the Riftwar books, particularly this one. And while the second series, set several decades after the end of the Riftwar in the original books is very good, it is not quite as good as the first series. But basically, get anything you can by Raymond Feist. Don't REALLY steal it....
Silverthorn is a relatively short book compared to the other 2 in the trilogy but it fits some good material, adventure and introductions of new characters into it. There’s not enough in this story about Pug in my opinion and I would have enjoyed to hear more about the world and training that he is undertaking but this is I guess simply a personal preference. In any case it’s a good book.
Princess Anita has been poisoned on the day of her wedding Arutha sets out into dark and forbidden lands in search of the herb Silverthorn which is the only thing that can save her, with time and dangerous enemies fighting against them, they must embark on a futile mission to save the woman he loves. He is accompained by a few great friends all with their own talents. They must fight the dark forces that fight against them and the kingdom. The characters and scenery is well described and you become engulfed in the land and the story. Lots of action and adventue, a must in this wonderful saga
Feist is absolutely fantastic. He is undoubtedly the leader of the fantasy genre. His characters are so amazingly realistic and his made-up narrative world so strong that it is easy to get lost in the story. Fantastic book by a fantastic author! You can’t go wrong with Raymond E Feist- sure some of his series are better than others, but they’re all good.
My all time favourite Feist book! Filled with action, adventure and romance as well as intrigue, suspense and humor, this book will have your fingers flying to reach the end and, in the end it will glue itself to your keeper shelf to be reread numerous times. A must read book, though you may have to read magician first to completely understand what is going on.
