The stunning conclusion to the Belgraid series, Garion, Silk and Belgarath make their way to where the mained god Torak lies in restless slumber. We read as Garion comes into his own through a journey that has it's own dangers. Eddings completes the series as only he can. A highly addictive series that leaves you wanting more.
Everything tied together nicely for the end of the series. The Belgariad series, from beginning to end, is a fantastic read. The characters will amuse and engage you and the plot, unlike some of his more recent works, is fresh and interesting. My own copies are falling apart from the number of times I have read them. I still enjoy them as much as I did as a teenager when I first read them. Highly recommended.
Overall, this was a good book and a decent series. If you are expecting an epic tale, like that of Steven Erikson, you will be disappointed. This is a series that is fun to read and does not require a great deal of effort to understand it. I would however recommend this series to newer fantasy readers as well as younger readers. It may be a good `hook' series to get more people interested. All in all not a bad finish to this saga.
Garion continues with Silk and Belgarath in order to meet Torak and try to defeat him, and deflect the massive armies of East and West meeting in a damaging confrontation. However, Garion is haunted by the question of how does a mortal hope to be able to kill a god? Meanwhile, Ce’Nedra continues to amass and command the armies of the West, in order to meet the Angarak armies and distract them from the small party who try to break into the Angarak stronghold, in order to slay their god.
A good finish to the Belgariad, yet quite predictable. The pacing is actually a bit slow, as the narrative has broken into a couple of different threads, instead of just following Garion as the series did at the beginning. The characters get a good amount of development too; Ce’Nedra does grow into a competent and strong character in her own right, finally, and a few characters do some surprising things at the end. A satisfying enough conclusion, with enough loose ends to contribute to another series, the Malloreon, which is set after this one.
if you imagined the perfect end to this series, you would probably imagine this book exactly. Eddings crafts Garion as almost two separate people. On one hand he is still a frightened young man trying to come to terms with the world he has been thrust into. On the other hand he is the Godslayer and quite literally the king of the world. Eddings manages to make both these sides of Garion shine through. While the first book is always going to be the best in my mind this one is a close second simply for the quality of the writing, which has gotten even better as time has gone on.
This is the stunning conclusion to the Belgariad series.
Garion must finally face off against the God Torak. So with the help of his grandfather, Belgarath the sorcerer, and Silk, they sneak off in the middle of the night, to confront his destiny. Its left to Princess Ce'Nedra and Aunt Pol to command the armies of the West, to divert Toraks forces so that Garon can make it through.
Torak might be a God, but he still fears Garion; because he wont be seeing Garion the farm boy coming to kill him. He will see Belgarion, King of Riva, the Godlayer, and the bearer the Orb of Aldur.
