– Customer review on 27/04/2006 Mercy Thompson is auto mechanic by day and, occasionally, by night a skinwalker. A different kind of fae from the werewolf pack that bought Mercy up, she turns into a coyote not a wolf. In a world where some of the less scary fae have let themselves be known to the general population, were's and skinwalkers are still firmly in the closet. Mercy is a tough character with just a hint of a soft heart which becomes apparent when she comes to the aid of a young were with no pack and no one to look out for him. Then there's murder, mystery and a local pack leader who's threatening to eat her cat should it wander onto his property again! There is also the "hint" of romance for said cat eater and a love from the past.
I loved this book and could not put it down as my dh will attest to! I read till 2 in the morning to finish it and I cannot wait for the 2nd one which is coming soon ,Blood Bound (Feb 2007). If you're into Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and especially Carrie Vaughn you'll love this urban fantasy novel.

– Customer review on 27/04/2008 this book was a nice change from the super aggressive supernatural chick that is currently toted as the fantasy uber woman.
the main character, mercedes thompson, is just a regular girl trying to make a living as an auto mechanic. for hundreds of years the supernatural community has remained secret with few humans knowing the extent to which gremlins, vampires, werewolves, and other fey have secretly infiltrated their world. but now due to the 'Gray Lords' (an unknown government of fey leaders) the non-humans of the world are being forced out into the open. this includes mercy is a born 'skinwalker', someone who can change shape at will, her shape being that of a coyote.
all of this background creates an interesting milieu in which mercy can discover her true self as a supernatural power to be reckoned with, or a human wannabe.
all in all this was a great read and i cant wait to see what happens next!

– Customer review on 14/04/2007 This was good. Despite the mechanic-as-pop-tart cover, this was not a romance novel, although the elements are there for it to degenerate into such if they decide that is what sells.
Werewolf pack leader next door, childhood werewolf boyfriend, itself.
The hero of the piece is a skinwalker, though, and a smaller variety of canine. She has a few guns, but does not have the fetish or aggressively obnoxious stance that Anita Blake does. Being a mechanic, not a cop-necromancer might have something to do with that.
There is a little more humour in these.
"Stefan's bus was painted to match the Mystery Machine, which said a lot about the vampire it belonged to. Stefan told me that he'd briefly considered painting it black a few years ago when he started watching Buffy, but, in the end, he'd decided the vampire slayer was no match for Scooby Doo."
There is some slight mention/foreshadowing of the fact that this woman is more powerful than she knows, so her superheroic antics may become more pronounced in future as she finds out about them, even though she handles multiple violent werewolves here.
"How did you break your arm, Mercy?" he asked.
A werewolf tossed me against a giant packing crate while I was trying to rescue a frightened young girl who'd been kidnapped by an evil witch and a drug lord."

– Customer review on 07/08/2008 This is the first book in the series and i really enjoyed this fast paced, modern day, fantasy.
Mercy's charcter is a down to earth Mechanic who can "Shape Shift" into a coyote. I really enjoy books about vampire's and werewolf's so at first i thought "a coyote, so what" but it's actually very interesting how the author makes her out to be one of the most unique charcters in the super natural under world.
Mercy is made to be she just an every day person, with no special healing abilitities or spells she has to earn a living and lives alone in a small trailer, the cool thing about that is that you relate to her and you begin to realise she is actually more special that she thinks and her individuality allows her to make connections with all different super natural people like vampires, faeries, werewolfs etc who usually stick to themselves.
great read for all ages!!

– Customer review on 28/07/2008 A sensational tale of adventure and heroism, with a plot of nail-biting suspense and unerring action. Brilliantly written by a true master of the genre. The characters are perfect in every sense- real and intriguing. They struggle against bitter enemies and through great danger, and come out triumphant! Simply the best!!!

– Customer review on 18/07/2008 This is the first time I have read a Patricia Briggs book, and havent read anything like it before. I found it a fantastic read. The main character Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter but portrays all the emotions and experiences of a young woman finding herself in life and where her heart lies. There is humour and a touch of romance that builds up and finally happens in the end. I couldn't put this book down and am now on to the next book 'Blood Bound' which should be just as good a read as this one. This is a must to read!

– Customer review on 11/03/2008 This book is great and very hard to put down once you start! Definately worth the read, as are the other books in the series. Mercy is a mechanic and a shape changer (coyote) who was raised by werewolves in a world where vampire, fae and werewolves co-exist with humans. She is a fairly tough, but likeable character and the story is a sharply written action thriller in a believable alternate universe. The characters are very well written. There is some romantic tension between Mercy and her old flame, but in small doses that sit well in the story. Very enjoyable start to the series!

– Customer review on 16/04/2007 Definitely worth it, although the front covers of this series annoy me. Mercy is definitely not the tartish kind.
Along the lines of Anita Blake but with an actual story and character development. None of the sex, either :) But the characters are believable and easy to like, and the potential is pretty good.

– Customer review on 14/03/2007 Despite a slow start, this is a good fun read with enough excitement and sexual tension to keep you going. Mercy is a Walker - she can change into a coyote. Unlike were animals, she is not ruled by the pull of the moon. She's been brought up by werewolves and lives next door to the city's alpha. When Mac, a young werewolf, turns up at her garage obviously in need of assistance, Mercy gets more intangled in a life she thought she'd left.

– Customer review on 13/03/2007 I must admit that this book is good but still, it didn't really do it for me... I love stories of supernatural beings, but this book didn't really grab my attention until about 3/4 of the way. It's a personal taste I guess, I like the characters, they're awesome, I like the way it was written and how things were described, but the story line just wasn't my taste. However, I still think this book is a good read :) That 1/4 of the story that did grab my attention made me want to read the next Mercedes Thomson story "Blood Bound".
