Debuting at #4, this "New York Times" bestseller by the popular author of "Going Postal" describes a game of Trolls and Dwarfs, where the player must take both sides to win.
From The Publisher:
Once, in a gods-forsaken hellhole called Koom Valley, trolls and dwarfs met in bloody combat. Centuries later, each species still views the other with simmering animosity. Lately, the influential dwarf, Grag Hamcrusher, has been fomenting unrest among Ankh-Morpork's more diminutive citizens— a volatile situation made far worse when the pint-size provocateur is discovered bashed to death . . . with a troll club lying conveniently nearby.
Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch is aware of the importance of solving the Hamcrusher homicide without delay. (Vimes's second most-pressing responsibility, in fact, next to always being home at six p.m. sharp to read "Where's My Cow?" to Sam, Jr.) But more than one corpse is waiting for Vimes in the eerie, summoning darkness of a labyrinthine mine network being secretly excavated beneath Ankh-Morpork's streets. And the deadly puzzle is pulling him deep into the muck and mire of superstition, hatred, and fear— and perhaps all the way to Koom Valley itself.

Pratchett's books seem to now be written to a formula. This is a nice addition, with a few clever bits. Once you've read it, though, you won't be able to distinguish it from all the other Discworld novels.
As always Terry Pratchett is on the ball.Thud is another in a long line of laughfests that I always grab as soon as they hit the shelves.Poor Carrot and Vimes stuck in a war between trolls and dwarves that can be resloved if only both sides will help the other.brick the troll seems to have the answers but not the brain to get it right.Vimes also has Sybil watching his every move to see that he eats right and reads to young Sam every night.Great laughter medicine for todays weary traveller
Again Pratchett inspires, and creates a magnificent parody of 'real life' in discworld. Here he returns to the members of the Watch, and Vimes works to sove a mystery between the trolls and the dwalves....
And there is even a board game involved, which makes things even better....
If you have read a decent number of Terry Pratchett's other works, you will realise that he has mentioned Koom Valley more than a few times. It was a battle between dwarves and trolls, and each side blames the other for what happened. Finally, we get to learn a bit more about Koom Valley (and the dwarves and trolls both get a few answers as to why it happened and who 'won'), in a story that will keep you turning the pages right until you reach the end.
This is the best book in thw orld. I don't know what else to say. Sam Vimes is my favourite character ever and I loved the mystery in this. I also loved Young Sam, Sybil, Sergeant Angua, Captain Carrot, Sergeant Colon, Sally (the vampire, salacia), Cheery Littlebottom, Sergeant Detritus, Brick...everybody! Read the other Vimes first but DO READ THIS. take my word for it, its great.
Thud, one of the best disworld books out so far. Pratchett has written another excellent novel in the city watch series. With this book he (Sam Vimes) has more problems with dwarves, trolls, AM, and Koom valley. Recently I have bought this great book and since I got it I have not been able to put it down. An amazing book really worth a read and a great gift for many people - A must have.
Terry Pratchett has done it again. With Thud! (the thirtieth Discworld book), Pratchett returns to the adventures of the "coppers" of Ankh-Morpork, one of the largest cities on the Discworld. It's been a while since we've had a straight "City Watch" book, with Night Watch being a character study of Commander Samuel Vimes. The subsequent books being stand-alones, I've really missed seeing the Watch in action. Thud! runs on all cylinders, going back to the basics that made Pratchett what he is today. You've got your quirky characters, you've got your hilarious footnotes (something which seems to have otherwise disappeared from Pratchett's books, much to my chagrin), and you've got Vimes leading them all, trying to be the best copper he can be, doing what's right despite what everybody else seems to want him to do.
In the more recent of Discworld novels, Terry Pratchett has offered his loyal readers a whole host of new characters and developments for Discworld's most famous city, Ankh-Morpork. AM now has its own newspaper and a postal service. New communication technologies have brought the city's distant neighbours much, much closer. War has been raging in the small country of Borogravia and was the subject of Pratchett's previous novel, "Monsterous Regiment". But what happens when war comes to the city of Ankh Morpork? This is the basis of "Thud!", in which a intricate conspiracy is underway in an attempt to pitch the dwarves against the trolls. It's Koom Valley all over again. Samuel Vimes is Pratchett's best character and in "Thud!" he simply shines. Another unbelievably good Discworld book!
This is probably one of the "deepest" discworld novels that I have read, it covers some very serious issues of race and prejudice with good humour and a very entertaining plot. Vimes has to be one of Pratchett's most complex characters, we are still learning things about him even now. Plus there are several chapters where the girls of the city watch run around naked in mud if you have a good imagination ;-)
My husband is a keen fan of Terry Pratchett, and I recently bought this book as a birthday present for him. I read it as well - couldn't put it down! Terry Pratchett has yet to publish a book not worth reading. I loved the references to Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code", and the Koom Valley conflict. If you are into Pratchett, buy this one!
