Magician is a wonderful fantasy novel that will be enjoyed by all fans of the genre. The simple beginning of the story of two young boys soon draws you into a magical journey that will ultimately impact the fate of two worlds. This new expanded edition adds subtle details to the story which makes it even more enjoyable to read a second time. A good enough story to be read on its own, but most readers will be left wanting more, which the rest of the Riftwar saga (Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon) readily delivers.
I remember reading this book for the first time as a teenager and it has lost none of its allure. An exciting, fast passed adventure with diverse interesting characters. Well written, interesting relationships and set in a well constructed world. I have read this book many times and enjoy it every time. A wonderful start to a fantastic series. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an enjoyable and interesting read, even if you don't generally read books in this genre.
Many have said this book made Raymond E. Feist a great follow up fantasy writer to Tolkein, and I absolturely agree. Although this book sometimes lacks the excitement of Lord of the Rings, it definitely packs a punch, and can be hard to put down. Pug is a champ, to put it simply... and one of my favourite protagonists of all time. A must read for fantasy fans, and readers in general... very approachable.
This book is among very few that so many others are based on. In the truest sense this book brings all of the most basic elements together. Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Humans, and Aliens from another world.
In some superb writing, Feist makes you believe you haven't read it all before (Tolkien), and draws you in to an amazingly complete world. You travel with Pug from the courtyard of a keep, where he is the last potential apprentice standing, to being the greatest mage of two worlds. You see the growth of Thomas, from a wrestling lad on top of a hay bale, to the best warrior in all of history. Not only do all the cliches come into being, but you CARE about the characters, about who will be given the newly unearthed hammer of Olin, who will defend Crydee against dark elves, and what will happen if peace ever comes.
I have read this book three times. Everytime I want to read somehting new I end up coming back to this book as I'd rather read it again than read somehting insuperior. Feist poetically introduces us to his world and it's characters. This is a complete and rewarding read on it's own but will also wet your appetite for more and plenty more there is to keep you going!
Splendid use of an imagination as Fiest takes you on a journey between two very distinct worlds with characters and plot sprinting along as the pages turn with new surprises at everyturn. If you are really into epic with war, politics and a bit of magical plot thrust through the middle this is definately a book for you. You will find alot of the fantasy genre will be based upon themes within this book as constant ideas are taken from this. A true loser to hero story with drops of love, heartbreak, bravery etc thrown into the pot for an enthralling book. It is a must unless you have no imagination and like to keep things real. Not for hard boil detective fans (unless u have an open mind).
There is a reason why this book is consistently named in the top 100 popular novels (based on novels published overall not just fantasy novels) it is fast paced, exciting and creates an appealing new world populated with interesting characters. It says that this edition includes additions by the author but to be honest I couldn't really pick the differences.
Raymond e Feist is an amazing author, who writes about a vast world of magic and intrigue, in the style of J.R.R Tolkien,
