When Death takes her fairy godmother, Princess Emberella is left in the care of her other not-so-good-and-wise godmother. It's up to the three witches--Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg--to hop on their broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl "doesn't" marry the Prince. The 12th novel in the Discworld series. Reissue (August)
From The Publisher:
Be careful what you wish for...
Once upon a time there was a fairy godmother named Desiderata who had a good heart, a wise head, and poor planning skills--which unforunately left the Princess Emberella in the care of her "other" (not quite so good and wise) godmother when DEATH came for Desiderata. So now it's up to Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg to hop on broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl "doesn't" marry the Prince.
But the road to Genua is bumpy, and along the way the trio of witches encounters the occasional vampire, werewolf, and falling house (well this is a "fairy tale," after all). The trouble really begins once these reluctant foster-godmothers arrive in Genua and must outwit their power-hungry counterpart who'll stop at nothing to achieve a proper "happy ending"--even if it means destroying a kingdom.

There is very little I can say that is bad with Terry Pratchett's books, and this is no exception. I love his work, and I adore books that can make me laugh out load and want to read portions to my partner (despite his protesting). Witches Abroad is one of his books focusing on the Maiden, the Mother and... the Other One, and is not to be missed!
Magrat, deciding she will not be sex object, (which Nanny Ogg refers to as "a brown thing with holes in it) refuses to marry the kindly King of Lancre. Instead, learning martial arts from a book from Lobsang Dibbler, when an elderly witch friend of hers dies she doesn't just get some cutlery...
Instead she gets mission, which Magrat's favourite part of says "Do Not Bring the Old Hags, They Will Ruin Everything". But then, Granny Weatherwax has never been one to listen to kindly suggestions.
Heaven forbid you begin to cackle! The witches are a wonderful subseries of the fabulous Discworld one. Here we find Granny (sorry, Mistress!) Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat in their first adventure beyond Lancre's borders. With Granny refusing to bow to local traditions (witches are afterall not allowed!), Nanny menacing anything alcoholic, and Magrat bumbling her way through market places, this is a hilarious take on the familiar Cinderella theme, only this time, she MUSTN'T get her prince!
Another great Terry Pratchett with this one starting with when Death takes her fairy godmother, Princess Emberella is left in the care of her other not-so-good-and-wise godmother. It's up to the three witches--Magrat Garlick, Granny Weatherwax, and Nanny Ogg--to hop on their broomsticks and make for far-distant Genua to ensure the servant girl "doesn't" marry the Prince. Something that is defiantly a must have for most of the Terry Pratchet readers.
One of the very best in the Witches series, witches abroad continues the stroy of Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg (its good luck to give her beer) and Magrat Garlik as they desperately attempt to thwart a fairytale ending thats not all its cracked up to be.
While on the surface this is just a fun ride, Pratchett always manages to work in some very complex themes, especially regarding psychology and its role in magic.
With a very Shrek2 feel, Pratchett (well in advance of the cgi animated feature) deconstructs fairytales by replacing them with one of his own: a fairy godmother who must stop (yes, stop! halt! kibosh!) a Cinderella-esque character from marrying her prince, or risk the destruction of everything! Fantastical imagery, and interesting themes.
