Anyone familiar with Anne McCaffrey's Pern series will probably be surprised by the Acorna series she has co-written with Elizabeth Ann Scarborough - she has succeeded in creating a completely separate universe with no hint of 'Pern' about it.
Acorna's Children tells the story of the daughter of the main protagonists in the early Acorna series, but can be read as a stand alone - the story telling is compelling and you don't need to have read the first few books to understand this one.
