A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of a passionate love affair that endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap. From The Publisher: A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant. An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

An astounding premise for a story - a time traveller who has an enduring love for his future wife - as he stumbles back and forth through a hundred years or so of his life. Henry DeTamble is a nerdy librarian with an amazing ability to find trouble. His knack comes from a chromosomal abnormality that enables him to time-travel. At times of stress, he disappears from the present to arrive in the past or the future, naked and nauseous, and often in dangerous situations. The common themes to his travel are loss (his mother), love (his wife Clare) and troubled relationships (ex-girlfriend Ingrid and alcoholic father). The characters are flawed and yet the story is believable, as Henry often gives Clare future important dates and his loved ones information about the stock market and lottery numbers, but he can not alter the future...
While it is, in essence a love story, it does not descend into the sentimental. It can be a bit difficult to keep track of the time-line and secondary characters at times, but it is well written and tightly paced so as to leave you constantly turning to the next page. I can guarantee that the last few chapters will leave you with a lump in your throat and tears welling...especially the last line of Henry's love letter to Clare. "I love you, always. Time is nothing." Read it and weep. A thoroughly beautiful book.

The Time Traveler's Wife is an ingenious story told brilliantly. I found myself unable to put it down once I started reading. I wished it never ended! It is not your conventional love story but it is one of the most romantic love stories I have read in a long time. Definitely highly recommended!

I bought this book for my wife and it really sounded like a girly read. She said she loved it so I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it!! The whole time travel thing is excellent and adds to the story rather than detracts from it as some science fiction is want to do. There is a very good reason that this book is on the best-seller list, and those who we have recommended it to have enjoyed it also. Henry and Claire are truly likable characters written with a depth and warmth that makes it very sad to leave them behind when the last page has been read. This is a book that has stuck with me for some time, a memorable read.

Audrey Niffenegger is a paper artist (like Clare, the eponymous character), and the Time Traveller’s Wife is her first novel. This is a fairly unconventional story with a structure which reinforces Henry’s confusion stemming from his “chrono displacement syndrome”. A beautiful and tragic love story, and magic realism at its best. I recommend Niffenegger’s picture book “The Adventuress” as well.

Three words that would think to put together in a book - time travelling and romance. But it really worked and this book I simply could not put down. The lives of Henry and Clare grip you and tugs at your heart strings. Its the type of book that you dont want to end and could just read and read! But when you do get to the end, awwwwwww.

5 Stars for this wonderfully constructed novel.
This is a beautifully unusual love story that flips back and forth through time. Happy and sad, I wept a few tears during this one.
If you want to read a story about a love that breaks the boundaries of time, this one is for you.
Some science fiction fans may also enjoy this one, though it is not a science fiction in the traditional sense.

I found this a little difficult to get in to (as did the person I recommended it to) but persevered and found myself caught up in one of the most moving stories I've ever read. It is rare for a book to bring me to tears, but this one did.
Very difficult to categorise, it is a love story, a fantasy story, science fiction and mystery. For those capable of slights of fancy yet wanting reality to ground them.

this was one of the most popular books in 2004, shooting straight to the tops of new york times best seller and other best sellers list as soon as it was published. i love how the author audrey niffenegger managed to tackle what was technically a sci fi theme and make it so believable and sweet

i usually do not to the delve in to stories with science fiction as the main theme, as i usually find them unbelievable and the characters not easy to relate to. this is not the case for the time travler's wife. what a beautiful story this is and what beautiful main characters audrey nifeeneger has created in the form of claire and henry

I found this book suprisingly good. It is like something I've never read before. The Time Traveller's Wife is a stroy about a man who has a disorder that makes him travel through time. It's on some of these time travels that Clare meets and falls in love with her future husband. She first meets him when she is six and continues to see him until then. This a romance/drama story with a difference. Great read. Definitly a must. You won't be able to put it down. A good read to curl up with on the couch or enjoy on the beach over these Christmas holidays.
