Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of "draco nobilis" ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a "noble" dragon, after all...).

This is a introduction into life in Ankh-Morpork. You meet the Night watch and Patrician and a few interesting Characters along the way.. Despite the title the Hero of the story is not who you think it is and the twist is absolutely divine.
You get a good look at just how Ankh-Morpork think ... especially when faced with a Dragon as King. 'Give them enough time and they will think its their own idea'.
Terry Pratchett captures the human spirit in this Novel. I recommend it to anyone whether your a Diskworld fan or not.
Guards Guards is one of the first Pratchett novels I read, and it is still one of my favourites to this day. Filled with laugh out loud moments, and full of fun (and exploding swamp dragons), it is very much worth a read and worth buying - especially since if you are anything like me, you will want to read it far more than once!
Sam Vimes, alcoholic and in a dead-end job as commander of the waste of city money, the Night Watch, is about to have a bad week. It starts with a dragon - not the nice, tame, explosive little swamp dragons but instead a creature, summoned by the Inane Society for Little Idiots (may not have got the name right, sorry), which wants to take over the city.
Well, they say life as a recovering alcoholic is hard.
Okay, Terry Pratchett is a legend, and this is the first novel about the "Night Watch". The characters are fantastic, but the other reviews cover this kind of stuff. I am impressed with Pratchett and in this novel, I love his coverage of the dragons... in particular, the swamp dragons and their home with Lady Sybill. Well worth a read, and watch for other novels focussing on the "Watch" as Sam Vimes uses the swamp dragons fairly frequently for defensive purposes!
The eight discworld book is a definite improvement on the last couple, and certainly funnier. Much as with everything else in the discworld, the cops are useless, and really don't want to have to work too hard or do much at all. Turning up, having lunch, or supper, or whatever, and then going home is fine with them.
Cults and dragons get in the way, though, and they have to do some policing while Pratchett happily spoofs the cop genre.
Here be dragons! The beginning of the fabulous "City Watch" series of Discworld novels. Here we get to read about the exploits of Samuel Vimes as he leads his ragtag bunch of officers on a search to uncover the sinister plot of the Elucidated Brethren to gain power in the city of Ankh-Morpork by summoning a dragon. Sergeant Colon and Corporal Nobbs provide most of the laughs as the funniest pair of coppers ever since....er....has there ever been a pair of funny coppers? Books this good are one in a million. But as any Discworld fan knows, one in a million chances come up 9 times out of 10 when it comes to Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
Terry Pratchett it at his best when chronicling the adventures of Sam Vimes and his brood of misfit night watchmen. In Guards! Guards!, the first of the night watch episodes, we are introduced to world weary yet socially conscious Vimes, nice but dim Colon, courageous but niave Carrot (who is determined to uphold every law ever passed in Ankh Morpork, no matter how out of date or ridiculous) and the lowest common denominator, Nobby Nobbs. As the neglected and under resourced night watch they muct battle dragons to protect their beloved city, recruiting an Ape and an extremely eligible but eccentric Lady along the way.
As usual a fantastic book by a living legend. Highly recommended.
