When last seen, the singularly inept wizard Rincewind had fallen off the edge of the world. Now, magically, he's turned up again, and this time he's brought the luggage. But once upon a time, there was an eighth son of an eighth son who was a wizard. Then said wizard had seven sons. And then he had an eighth son -- a wizard squared who was a source of magic: a sorcerer.

As usual, Terry Pratchett delivers some laugh out loud moments in this Discworld novel, despite it being one of the earlier ones he wrote. I love the Librarian most of all (he is a loveable and disagreeable creature, after all... just don't call him a monkey). Anyhow, a sorcerer is around this time, and he isn't that old - he is very talented though, and quite willing to take over the university. Follow what happens, and smile as Rincewind gets himself into trouble time and time again.
The seventh son of a seventh son is always a sourceror - filled with powerful magic that none can contain. Normally they leave the Discworld for better places, but this sourceror is obeying anothers wishes - his powerful father, who clings to the boys staff and urges him for vengeance. But perhaps Rincewind can stop him...with a sock filled with sand. Lets not get our hopes up.
I am sure there are plenty of people out there who are willing to disagree with me on this but I found this to be one of Terry Pratchett's weaker discworld novels. This might be down purely to personal preference though, I never really took to Rincewind and the wizards of UU as characters (except for the librarian of course). I suppose the story is decnt but defintely not one of my favourites.
An ensemble cast, you could say, perhaps. Pratchett comes up with the whacky sourcerers, throwing that into the whole discworld and the number eight thing, with the eighth son of an eighth son of an eighth son type deal.
Rincewind, Death, the Librarian, and others have to deal with one of these guys to again stop the discworld being no longer a discworld.
