It's "Phantom of the Opera", Discworld style, when an aspiring singer and part-time witch wins a part in the big city opera, and quickly learns of a shadowy figure haunting the house. Now her sorceress companions Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg must come to her aid, before the fat lady sings her last rites!
From The Publisher:
The Ghost in the bone-white mask who haunts the Ankh-Morpork Opera House was always considered a benign presence -- some would even say lucky -- until he started killing people. The sudden rash of bizarre backstage deaths now threatens to mar the operatic debut of country girl Perdita X. (nee Agnes) Nitt, she of the ample body and ampler voice.
Perdita's expected to hide in the chorus and sing arias out loud while a more petitely presentable soprano mouths the notes. But at least it's an escape from scheming Nanny Ogg and old Granny Weatherwax back home, who want her to join their witchy ranks.
Once Granny sets her mind on something, however, it's difficult -- and often hazardous -- to dissuade her. And no opera-prowling phantom fiend is going to keep a pair of determined hags down on the farm after they've seen Ankh-Morpork.

Certainly a different take on the Phantom of the Opera tale. Perdita (or Agnes) doesn't want to become a witch - enter stage left Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax. A great story from a master story-teller, as always Pratchett delivers laugh out loud moments and lots of smiles throughout this awesome book.
Agnes Nitt, or perdita X dream as she prefers to be known, has decided that she doesn't want to be a witch. She's seen the senior witches watching her, and that's not how she wants her future to be, thank you very much. instead, she's going to be an opera singer, despite the fact that...well....she's rather large...
But granny Weatherwax and Nanny ogg read trouble into Agnes's situation. And they're not about to let a Lancre girl and possible future witch suffer on her own...
Frank Spencer never did it like this! Pratchett meets Phantom in the Phunniest one yet! (I couldn't resist). Agnes is written so wonderfully (I wish we saw more of her in other books), and Perdita is well, cliche, which is kind of the point I think. I did enjoy Greebo, I know I'd be keen on cornering him where his only option is to change into a dangerously attractive naked man! Granny as ever, is in complete control, with Nanny in her peculiarly vague way in full support.
This was the first Discworld novel I ever read and I'm been hooked ever since. Maskerade is a brilliantly written satirical masterpiece that had me in stitches. The gorgeous Nanny Ogg is in true form, with Granny Weatherwax at her best. Perdita/Anges is one of the best new additoins to the Discworld folk in recent times.
