Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading 'soul' who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

When i bought this book, i'd just read the Twilight saga and was greiving over missing the charactors so much (some may think abit sad of that but who cares..lol)! i'd tried to read a some other books but just could not get past the first page nothing could engage my attention from those wonderful twilight charactors. I didn't think Host would be as good either but boy was i wrong. i fell totally inlove with these charactors and couldn't put the book down. Stephanie Meyer has a wonderful gift. I just hope there is a sequel to this one!!!! cos im grieving these Charactors now.....
The Host was such an incredible book! When I first was given it as a gift I was very skeptical because it seemed so different from the Twilight books, and in all honesty the whole idea of parasite-worm-things (aka "souls") taking over human bodies weirded me out a bit too much... But after the first 100 pages (which are more difficult to get through as they just dont grab you completely yet) I was absolutely hooked. I've read this book over and over again and again. Wonderfully imaginative and creative. 6 stars!
I loved the twilight series, and was disappointed to find this book was slooooow to get into. It does not really grab your attention until chapter 3. Even then, I could happily put it down and walk away, and that's not something you can do with the twilight series (-: It's an okay read, but not great. Definitely not re-readable.
I think the reason is that the author does not manage to engage readers fully with the main character. The story showed great promise, but (and howl me down here if you want) for me it did not live up to it.
I don't recommend buying this for young teens as I think most will find it too slow, as I did. This is totally directed at a different audience from the twilight series. So the best people to check it out are ironically those who weren't so fond of the twilight series, as I have a friend who detests twilight (go figure lol) but loves this book. So if you keep the different target readers in mind when deciding whether or not to buy it, you won't go astray.
if you have read stephanie meyers other series (Twilight) then you will pleasantly surprised to find this is completely different. still a wonderfully smooth easy read, still compeling reading and hard to put down. The host is about aliens who have taken over the human race. Wanderer one of the aliens is placed into a human body who won't let go and both have to share the same body. i was sceptical as to how this would be translated to the reader thinking "just another alien abduction" but the story isn't like that at all. meyer is a great story teller, there is a bit of romance but not too icky and she develops characters extremely well. i enjoy her twists and turns and suspence. a very enjoyable read.
An amazingly captivating scenerio which dabbles in romance, fear and finding your own identity. Loved the book so much I couldn't put it down once I got my head around the difference between a 'host' and a 'soul'. Would definantly recommend it!
I read this straight after the Twilight series and was a bit sceptical about "science fiction" stuff. I was pleasantly surprised. It took a few chapters to get into but then I was hooked. You find yourself so into the characters that you start to think for them!
The romance aspect was wonderful too...... can't wait for the sequel.
