This was the third Jodi Picoult book I read (after Plain Truth and The Pact). I had some problems with the way she dealt with the 'issues' she dealt with in those books (namely the lack of veracity and a sense that she was being somewhat expoitative) but I enjoyed her writing and always finished the stories within a week, so I picked up this to give her another go.
Initially I was glad I did. "My Sister's Keeper" made me think about the issues surrounding genetic engineering in a different light, and the protagonist was a likeable intelligent girl who I cared about.
However, the ending to this book is a total COP OUT which destroys nearly everything Picoult built in the bulk of the novel. It left me feeling genuinely cheated. I would likely have given this book 3 1/2 stars if it had a fitting conclusion.
If you're looking for a book that explores the moral implications of genetic engineering through the lens of fiction, then pick up a copy of Kazuo Ishiguro's great "Never Let Me Go" instead. If wanting to try Jodi Picoult for the first time, then choose another of her books, perhaps a later work.
This was my first Jodi Picoult Book! I loved it! With all the twists and turn, it is brilliantly written! You have to read this book at least once! This book is more like a true story. Get your tissues ready!
My initiation into the work of Jodi Picoult, and I have since read most of her others. This book touches on a big issue of genetic modification, and the ethical issues involved. Knowing much about the inner workings of Bone Marrow Transplant and issues involved with cancer treatment, this book is very true to life from a medical standpoint. The issues raised are very real and the writing style keeps you coming back for more. I couldn't put it down. An excellent novel and the ending made me cry. I like a book that keeps me guessing and I never would have guessed the conclusion. Tugs on the heart-strings.
What can I say this book was riveting I simply could not put it down. Very thought provoking, staying with you long after you read the last page. Filled with complex characters that truly draw you into the dilemmas they face. Simply brilliant!
This was the first book i read by Jodi Picoult and have now read many more. I dont believe this is one of the best of her books but i still really enjoyed it. A child is born for the sole perpose of giving bone marrow, blood and other things to her sick sister. The story touches on many issues and is very interesting and sad. The stroy is told throughout by different characters in the story, i found this made the book a little harder to get into but reading this book lead to other books by the author which are great storys.
This is the first Jodi Picoult book I read and it got me hooked on her writing style!! A beautiful book-although some parts seemed a little far-fetched it was real and believable.
I have wanted to read this for ages. I was not disappointed.
The friend that I would have borrowed it off, had she got her own copy available told me that she was crying almost from the beginning. I didn't cry until the end. But my goodness! What an end! It hit me like a brick wall - or a truck. So powerful! Once I realised what was happening I could barely read through my tears.
I loved this book. And now, despite having read it, it will stay on my wish list until I get my own copy.
I am most definitely a Jodi Picoult fan now. I can see me finding second hand bookshops to scrounge in, really soon!
jodi picoult kis known for her controversial subject matter, having already tackled subjects as euthanasia (Mercy), teen suicide (The Pact) and sterilization laws (Second Glance). In this one, Anna is a perfect donor for her olders sister who is diagnosed with leukemia. Very well written and probably her best work out of an already impressive catalogue. Watch out for me of her books tackling social issues.
out of all of jodi picoult's published novels, this is easily the most well written and best thought and planned out. the story line is controversial and unforgettable. a young girl is born for the sole purpose of saving the life of an older sibling. how ever it is the shocking ending that really makes the book what it is: a master piece
