The wonderful village where Asterix and Obelix live has only one drawback: its bard is the worst musician in the ancient world. Whenever Cacofonix strikes up a tune, the sun hides behind the clouds and the rain begins to fall. But then a fakir flies in on a magic carpet asking for help in ending a terrible drought in his kingdom. Otherwise, his daughter Orinjade will be sacrificed to the gods. Suddenly, Cacofonix's talents come in mighty handy.

Cacophinix is finally allowed not only to accompany our heros on their adventures; but he is actually encouraged to sing on them too! With the life of the lovely Princess Orinjade on the line, the only thing that could possibly make the situation any worse would be if a sudden bout of laryngitous were to come..... Featuring some old friends and some new ones- this Asterix adventure is a worthy addition to the tradition.
Asterix always goes down a treat, and this one is no different. Asterix and Obelisk end up escorting Cacaphonix (who, for a reason I must have missed, produces rain when he sings) to India. There are some wonderful new characters with colourful names, and the oldies make their return (the Pirates, as always, get struck again!)
This is a good one of the new ones, not that they are bad per se, just not as good as the oldies, but in any case this one is pretty much on par with the oldies. A grand adventure that needed to have been done, I mean how can Asterix and co not check out the magic carpet and associated adventures? Beautifully done!
This is the 28th adventures published in French in 1987 and translated into English in 1988.
With Rene Goscinny deceased, Albert Uderzo began writing as well as illustrating the series. Not as good as the first 24, sales show that they are no less popular...
In this volume, a fakir from India called Watziznehm wants to break drought in his country, so he seeks out the Gaulish bard whose horrible voice can cause rain... good fun.
