High school all-American Neely Crenshaw was probably the best quarterback ever to play for the legendary Messina Spartans. Fifteen years have gone by since those glory days, and Neely has come home to Messina to bury Coach Eddie Rake, the man who molded the Spartans into an unbeatable football dynasty. Now, as Coach Rake's "boys" sit in the bleachers waiting for the dimming field lights to signal his passing, they replay the old games, relive the old glories, and try to decide once and for all whether they love Eddie Rake - or hate him. For Neely Crenshaw, a man who must finally forgive his coach --- and himself - before he can get on with his life, the stakes are especially high.

John Grisham has a way of writing that just draws the reader into a familiar yet intriguing and sometimes scary world of his. IT comes across as intelligent but doesn’t require the reader to strain at all – I’ve always seen it as airport fiction because I would always buy one before getting on a plane. By all this I mean that it is pretty good stuff!
John Grisham has been hailed by many as a fantastic writer in the legal thriller genre. I would agree that many of his books are stimulating and interesting to read. But if you’ve read one you’ve read them all. They follow the same blueprint time and time again. However, if you’re stuck for books or listening material they’re a good choice.
Not a ripper of a story, by any stretch of the imagination... a nice little "coming home" story about a group of guys who return home for their old coach's funeral, but the story never really goes anywhere... they talk, reminisce, talk some more, but that's about it; no real drama, no build up to anything... personally, I'd give it a miss...
A total bore that lacks any real plot. The first half of the book was a longwinded introduction to the characters. I decided to keep reading since it was a NY Times bestseller which made me think it was good.
There were no twists, just a boring story about american football.
Unless you have an interest in football, I wouldn't bother with this one.
