– Customer review on 01/02/2008 The cover really hypes this book - "writing this good comes along ... once or twice in a generation" - and I think that builds kind of unfair expectations. I enjoyed the book, but wouldn't rave quite like that. The setting, especially the parts in the Dominican Republic, make it interesting, as does the politics/history/background of DR, which I've never known much about. The book's structured looking at several generations of the family and to be honest, I sometimes got confused about how they all fit together, although it seemed to come together in the end. The footnotes drove me crazy (you'll see what I mean) but in the end, I was glad I'd read it.
