– Customer review on 13/10/2007 Losing It by Lizzie Wilcock is a novel that deals with teenage issues. Gabbie Martyn (the main protagonist) has to deal with a lot of changes in her life. First she falls in love with the new boy, Zak. Gabbie has never felt like this about a boy before, and is unsure about how to act. Then her best friend Zoe gets arrested for shoplifting, and Gabbie feels as if Zoe is shutting her out. Things get even more complicated when Gabbie’s Uncle moves in, and Gabbie finds herself lying to her parents. Suddenly life isn’t so easy, and Gabbie is losing the things that she needs most.
Overall, I thought that Losing It was an interesting and thought provoking novel. Gabbie made me think about loyalty and naivety in a different way, and the idea of lies not getting you anywhere, and having consequences inspired me to tell the truth all of the time, not just some of the time. Gabbie has to deal with teenage issues that a lot of other teenagers have to deal with also. Her problems climaxed at the end of the novel, but the way that Gabbie solved her problems at the end, shows how there is always light at the end of the tunnel – even the tunnel of adolescence!
