Such a classic! So many modern takes (The Simpsons, Bro'Town etc). Unlike it's predecessor: 'The Coral Island', it is a very true interpretation of what would happen if a group of boys were stranded on an island. Forgetting the fact that it is 50 years old so the boys are not missing their TVs and computers - it certainly hits home about human nature.

A group of boys are marooned on an island after their plane crashes. With no adult survivors, they create their own "micro-society". Ralph is elected "chief", and he organises shelter and fire. Jack, the head of the choir takes his boys hunting for food (wild pigs). A bitter rivalry develops between Jack and Ralph as both want to be in charge. The "hunters" become savage and primal, under Jack's rule, while Ralph tries to keep his group civilised. The growing hostility between them leads to a bloody and frighting climax.

This book is a story about what happens when societal boundaries are taken away. The premise is a group of boys, stranded on an island, have to form their own society and their own rules. What rules do they make? How do they cope when the rules begin to be broken? Th view of human nature presented here is fairly bleak, but the book is well worth the read; I found Golding's storytelling excellent.

I loved the story line of this book - a group of boys stranded on a random island, fighting for survival. Although, if they condensed the main storyline into a few chapters, it really would be a good read. I found this book quite difficult to read and boring as well. I can see how some would love it, but it's just not for me.
