– Customer review on 26/11/2008 This was my first Winton novel and I found it to be quite disappointing. The author appears to dislike the use of traditional punctuation to clearly define conversations between characters which made it difficult to follow the story line without encountering the distraction of having to re-read paragraphs to work out what was actually going on. I found the characters difficult to sympathise with and was generally unable to generate much interest in the story line, although I suspect that had a lot to do with the writing style which resulted in far from a relaxing read. Not totally horrible, but certainly not of the calibre you would generaly expect from an author of this standing.
