Zana Muhsen, born and bred in Birmingham, is of Yemeni origin. When her father told her she was to spend a holiday with relatives in North Yemen, she jumped at the chance. Aged 15 and 13 respectively, Zana and her sister discovered that they had been literally sold into marriage, and that on their arrival they were virtually prisoners. They had to adapt to a completely alien way of life, with no running water, dung-plastered walls, frequent beatings, and the ordeal of childbirth on bare floors with only old women in attendance. After eight years of misery and humiliation Zana succeeded in escaping, but her sister is still there, and it seems likely that she will now never leave the country where she has spent more than half her life. This is an updated edition of Zana's account of her experiences.

I studied this book back in High School for School C English, it was definately one of the more interesting books we looked at! It's sad (at the time of writing Nadia was still trapped in the Yemen) but really insightful at the same time to the harsh reality Yemeni society.
It is hard to say that you enjoy a book of this nature. However, there is no doubt that this is very intriguing to read and I certainly devoured it in one sitting (with plenty of breaks for tissues). This is an amazing story and really does make you think about women and their differing situations in the world. Followed up by two more books which were equally engrossing.
This book is heartbreaking - certainly have tissues handy. I thought it was very well written as it tells a difficult story in a relatable way. In a similar vein to Not Without My Daughter, this book is another example of how lucky we are to live in New Zealand.
I found the writing style to be quite basic. It would be a good book to study for 13-15 year olds.
Nonetheless, this true story gave me a picture of the village life in Yemen. The treatment of women is sad and the men have really taken complete power over them.
I think there is a sequel to this book as we are left not knowing what happens to Zana's sister, Nadia.
