On the hottest day of the summer of 1934, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, her childhood friend who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not even imagined at its start, and will have become victims of the younger girl's imagination. Briony will have witnessed mysteries, and committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone.

This book goes into my unofficial rank as one of the best reading experiences I've ever had. It tooks me days to shake the feeling that Briony was a part of my life. I was completely transported and I don't think there can be better praise than that. Atonement has a twist at the end that will shock and upset you for days. Do yourself a favor, and read it.
I'm a fan of the book and the film myself, but for anyone who wants a good read or film, it has to be this one. The beauty of this story is one that can melt your heart away. It's both a captivating and deeply moving romance that has you on the edge of your seat. I give it a A+ for anyone who loves a fantastic story.
Love. This is a perfect read. Buy it before you forget.
Good for anyone I say. The plot was a sign of a true artist.
This author is a genius.
Brilliant. I almost cried when I finished it.
great , ace. recommend.
Five stars. Definately. Very very very good.
Keep it up. Im planning on re-reading it soon (:
I'm not a real fan of the book. I found McEwan rambled on a lot. While I don't mind quite a bit of detail, I found some of the pages so laborious, I skipped pages. I'm a book lover who believes that you have to give the author room to create the world s/he wants you to see, but this didn't do it for me. I think that there were quite a few gems in the narrative that was lost in his meandering. I also felt that he captured life and it's complexities through the eyes of a child really well and was pleasantly surprised by that.
Wonderful! Sometimes I found the way the book was written just a little too scripted or over done - like he was a student trying to impress. A sad, sinister, beautiful tale of redemtion never quite obtained in life, but perhaps in death. I think McEwan did an amazing job of presenting the cognitive and emotional interpretations of a 13 year old girl. It reminded me of the things that I thought and said when I was that age (and I did cringe when I saw some of it as written word on the page!). For me, the characters were so belivable that I got completely tricked into thinking that the final plan for Atonement was actually based on something real in their lives...hope that makes sense...I'm trying not to give away the ending :)
This movie was sad yet powerful with performances from the actors and actresses being incredibly powerful. No surprise that it was nominated for several Academy Awards!! Keira Knightley plays her role with great perception and insightful, yet all the actors can be commended in this. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoy something poignant and gripping.
