Sharpe is in danger of losing the Light Company. He's lost his command to a man wealthy enough to purchase promotion, & to make things worse, the dreadful Hakeswill is back, with his deviant eye on Sharpe's wife- who is locked in the besieged city of Badajoz. Sharpe must get into the city to protect his wife and child, and the only chance he has of beating Hakeswill and regaining command is by joining the 'Forlorn Hope', and storming the breach in the walls, certain death...
A top-class historical novel, and one of the best Sharpe adventures.
For those interested in reading further on the siege of Badojoz, try Ian Fletcher's excellent "Badajoz 1812: Wellington's Bloodiest Siege".
