A epic in the truest sense of the word. This is one big novel, historically and culturally rich, full of well-crafted characters and wonderfully crafted plot lines. Perhaps a little to slow and long for some, this book will reward those with an appreciation for detailed writing that takes its time in building up characters, settings and plot. Highly recommended.
A novel based on attempts to trade with Japan, and its closed, low technology society of the time. One man gets caught up in this and held prisoner, hence he must learn how the society operates, the language, and culture, to try and survive. A Michener-like epic, as far as the history goes, and the incredible detail that goes into it, due to the length.
