From the celebrated imagination of Dean Koontz comes a powerful reworking of one of the classic stories of all time. If you think you know the story, you know only half the truth. Get ready for the mystery, the myth, the terror, and the magic of... DEAN KOONTZ'S PRODIGAL SON Every city has secrets. But none as terrible as this. His name is Deucalion, a tattooed man of mysterious origin, a sleight-of-reality artist who's traveled the centuries with a secret worse than death. He arrives as a serial killer stalks the streets, a killer who carefully selects his victims for the humanity that is missing in himself. Detective Carson O'Connor is cool, cynical, and every bit as tough as she looks. Her partner Michael Maddison would back her up all the way to Hell itself-and that just may be where this case ends up. For the no-nonsense O'Connor is suddenly talking about an ages-old conspiracy, a near immortal race of beings, and killers that are more-and less-than human. Soon it will be clear that as crazy as she sounds, the truth is even more ominous. For their quarry isn't merely a homicidal maniac-but his deranged maker.

Praise
Praise"A compelling read.... The odd juxtaposition of a police procedural with a neo-gothic, mad scientist plot gives the novel a wickedly unusual and intriguing feel ... with an elegant cliffhanger ending."--Publishers Weekly"This is classic Koontz at his best. The plot zips along, the characters are grotesque and funny. The basic elements of Mary Shelley's novel, though slightly altered, fit right in."--Fangoria

A great premise, but actually, it turns out to be a fairly average read from the great thriller writer Dean Koontz... There's not enough of Deucalion [Frankenstein's monster], but Victor Frankenstein (a la 'Helios') is a hissingly evil bad guy... sadly, the whole thing reads like bad TV... still, a fun enough read...
dean koontz is the best horror author ever, i loved this book, it kept me on edge, ur new age frankenstein monster and cloned robots.. its a gripping book. it lets ur imagination run wild. but i dint like the ending because it just stops abruptly leaving the rest to ur imagination which is a bummer but this was a great novel, im abig dean koontz fan now. there are human cops involved in this as well so its like ur everyday horror movie.. dean koontz is a brilliant writer i would recommend this book to anyone who is a horror fan.

I loved this book! Dean Koontz has a fluid writing style and his plotlines are always interesting, even when they sometimes feel a little off track. Still, this is the first in his series and I believe it sets the scene for Koontz's modern day Frankenstein perfectly. With supernatural twists to a cop-thriller, Koontz never fails to deliver a well fleshed out book with deep characters. Trust me, you'll want the sequel lined up as this one will leave you hanging! Excellent start to an exciting series.
This book was jam packed with intriguing characters, had a solid storyline, and a very unique plot.
The only downside would be the banter between the two main characters, which was rather annoying at times. Other than that, this was a terrific read.
The whole Roy Pribeaux sub plot is also interesting, but considering the development and the unwinding of the plot, seems rather pointless with respects to the overall story.
It also would have been nicer had the story focused on Jelly Biggs and Deucalion, who are two fascinating characters that weren't involved enough IMO.
I highly recommend this book, as it is one of the best from a great author.
