The Stand was a fantastic book (like all of Stephen King’s work). It took me quite a long time to really get into the story as there were a lot of characters introduced throughout the book. But like most of his books, the characters are carefully developed and as the book goes on, the plot gets more exciting.
In a nutshell, The Stand had a very realistic look on the Apocalypse and for a few days, I had to check if my throat was swollen whenever I sneezed or coughed!
Yes. Thinking the best book ever. Period. The ultimate in the good versus evil battle. Not a typical "horror story" so don't be afraid to read it, thinking you don't like "those" kinds of books with ghosts or goblins. It's not one of "those." Yes, some strange happenins', but if the world were coming to end, wouldn't you expect there to be? A must read.
God has stirred and the Apocalypse is upon us, however it's all part of His grand design... King plays with Christianity's core beliefs fearlessly in this puritanical age in which we live, but ends up reaffirming them. A horror novel for the God Squad: who woulda thunk it? Interesting, but the usual weak King ending.
this is definitly one of my favorite books ever. every character is self supported in its own story line, there are no secondary characters. and the slightly creepy way stephen king hints that this could not only happen but most likely will is skin crawling. if ever you were going to read a stephen king book, make sure its this one.
I have yet to read a Stephen King novel that i seriously disliked and 'The Stand' is definately one of my favourites. Stephen Kings novels are not only riddled with pant-peeing terror but they are well written and well evolved pieces of work.
The Stand is an apocalyptic novel, a story of the polarisation of good and evil and the catalysts each side uses to bring forth their envisioned futures.
Like all Stephen King Stories the book is much better than the film, it is the only way to get into the hearts, heads and feelings of each of the characters. Whilst this is a big book, it takes time to develop the story and the characters and is well worth the time. The story shows the vulnerability of the human race and shows the destruction and aftermath of a deadly virus. It is interesting to see how quickly people’s natural character comes to life in such frightening times. This story shows the deepest sides to human nature and explores the lengths people will go to for love and hate, with of course a little help from the eternal powers that be. This is a modern day battle between the purist forms of good and evil. Does mankind deserve to live and will they fight with everything they have for not only themselves and their families but for humankind and there very souls. Pick up this book and enjoy the journey.
A great read from Stephen King. A virus wipes out the majority of humanity and the survivors must come together and deal with the aftermath but first they must choose a side, good or evil.
Totally engrossing and seemingly realisitic characters who you can relate to even with their flaws. Made into a mini series which while not as good as the book is worth a view.
One of The Kings greater books, and also a movie. This will keep you occupied for a long time, but its worth the read. King creates realistic and diverse characters, and the plot is engaging.
I felt this book was particularly relevant with the current bird flu, as it is basically about a virus, highly contagious, that is causing the end of society as we know it. At times, I felt it was similar to his new book 'Cell', as it follows a similar theme, but uses cellphones to spread the virus. If you find the length of this book daunting, read Cell first - it is a faster read, although not as good.
There are two versions of THE STAND. I believe this is the original 1979 version, which was abridged. In 1990, to coincide with the release of the movie, Stephen King added in more pages to complete his work. I suggest before you buy, you look up both versions and decide which you want. But read atleast one of them!
A compelling and engrossing story set in a post apocalyptic world and centered around the battle between the human spirit and the dark evil we are all capable of. This story is admittedly long but Stephen King's solid style and well crafted characters and a highly plausible storyline make this a well worth while read. The book builds up at a fairly solid pace to the climactic and thrilling finish. A polished and ultimately satisfying read.
Only a real Stephen King fan can truely enjoy this book. I am a fan and enjoyed it, even read it twice. The Stand is a very long story and the shear thinkness of the book puts many people off from reading it.
Stephen Kind takes lots of time to develop the characters, which helps making this an very good read. As usual, the end is a trademark ending.
