When a letter arrives for unhappy but ordinary Harry Potter, a decade-old secret is revealed to him that apparently he's the last to know. His parents were wizards, killed by a Dark Lord's curse when Harry was just a baby, and which he somehow survived. Escaping his hideous Muggle guardians for Hogwarts, a wizarding school brimming with ghosts and enchantments, Harry stumbles upon a sinister adventure when he finds a three-headed dog guarding a room on the third floor. Then he hears of a missing stone with astonishing powers which could be valuable, dangerous, or both.

'Funny, imaginative, magical Rowling has woken up a whole generation to reading. In the 2020s, thirty-something book-lovers will know each other by smug references to Diagon Alley and Quidditch' The Time 'Has all the makings of a classic Rowling uses classic narrative devices with flair and originality and delivers a complex and demanding plot in the form of a hugely entertaining thriller' Scotsman 'Full of surprises and jokes; comparisons with Dahl are, this time, justified' Sunday Times 'And you thought wizardry was for children. Harry Potter will make you think again. He casts his spells on grown-ups too' James Naughtie

for a first novel, this was stunning. the sheer volume of j k rowling's planning and her vivid portraits of the magical world, in particular the splendid haven that is hogwarts school of witch craft and wizardry, is really some thing that no person of this generation should miss. a must read
An extraordinary book thats superior to every other literary book except for the sequels. This is what started the special series and is a must read. All the books are great though I feel the sequels are better. Very well written, compelling story everything you could ask for. Great for all ages.
this is the book that really got me hooked! i love it, it is right back at the start of it all, as it is harrys first year at the best school ever aka hogwarts, which seems to be such fun for all! ron, harry, and hermione form an excellent group of three, and at the end of the book have to battle to save the philosphers stone!
it is strange going back and reading again the book that propelled joanne kathleen rowling into super stardom and made her creation harry potter an instantly recognisable name worldwide. still, no matter how many times i reread this gem, i never get tired of it, no matter how old i get, and i think i never will
the first title in the all famout harry potter series, harry potter and the philosophers stone kick starts one of the most famous series of books, and i can see why, the story is fantastic and the idea of a boy wizard is priceless, you must go out and buy this book, it is just that good.
The initial Harry Potter book wasn't that great, although the 2nd and 3rd books were a significant improvement. It was okay, but I'm not sure how it sparked a worldwide frenzy.
The book is very reminiscent of an Enid Blyton book. Harry's friends are very stereotyped, and all the adults are depicted as insane non-human aliens who are irrational and disconnected with reality. The book wasn't that exciting either. Thankfully, somebody made a bigger effort with the later books.
The cover of this adult edition is fantastic! However, this first book is very kiddie. Luckily, later books are better for a more mature audience.
The first book in Rowling's Harry Potter series. Certainly weaker than the following novels but a necessary start to the series. The wizard world and its mysteries are explained and this sets the scene for the later books. Having said that, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone still has a strong plot and characters.
If you haven't Heard of Harry Potter then its time to move out from under that rock!
JK Rowling's Creation is a brilliant creation which carry's its reader through the a magical world which runs parallel to (but hidden from) our life. The Story threads, seemingly simple to begin with, weave into a complex fabric which encourages the reader to expand their reading so that every clue, however small, is understood.
Orphaned at a young age Harry is raised by his Aunt and Uncle, who treat him as a servant, It is not until his eleventh birthday that the Magical world fully envelopes him.
Now with his Friends Ron and Hermione. Harry struggles to master his wizardly powers, while Various powers try to destroy him. Powers which lead back to Voldemort the Man who Killed his Parents and who's very name evokes fear in the Wizarding Community.
