– Customer review on 21/09/2008 This book covers so many dark topics--domestic violence, child abuse, alcoholism, and yet it is surprisingly readable. It centres on Ann, the baby born too early while her father is trying to burn down the house, the little girl who was left behind when her father's favourite disappeared, the child who stops speaking and then starts again. I found the book and the characters compelling, and Detman managed to make me feel some sympathy even for those characters I thought i should loathe.
