'I absolutely love Memoirs of a Geisha - it takes you on such a rollercoaster ride! You really feel for the main character, Sayuri, who is taken from her poor Japanese background, sold into slavery and then groomed to be a geisha. I so badly wanted to help her have a better life. The book will take you through every emotion. Well worth the read!' New Woman, May 2005

A very clear insight into a way of life I knew nothing about. Loved it. I found it very sad, and confusing in places, but I couldn't put it down. Thoroughly recommend it - I haven't seen the movie but I understand that it is different in places.
Read this book before seeing the movie! I just finished this novel and loved it! Wonderfully evocative, with a story that just keeps you gripped, this novel is going to be around for a very long time. It was hard to remember it was written by a man, the detailing was superb, the characters seemed so real, and you really cared about what happend to the heroine. I can definately recommend this book.
This is one of the best books by a man about a woman that I have ever read. Golden really gets inside the head of a young girl who is unexpectedly thrown into geisha-rtraining at a young age and witnesses the fall of old Japan. Well worth a read, and much better than the movie.
The book that inspired a movie is definitely worth a read before viewing. It follows the life of a girl who is thrown into the world of Geisha. From the first page, this book is attention grabbing, and places the reader in a far away world that is hard to grasp, but arty and captivating nonetheless. I would highly recommend this book.
