– Customer review on 15/12/2008 A delightful and utterly hilarious book, I read this before The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts as I did not realise it was the third book in the series (I still haven't read the third one). Each book can be read on its own, although it is probably best to read them in order. This book is a peculiar satire which tells the story of civil war in an unspecified South American country, and while the tale is certainly very odd and quite unlike anything you're likely to have read before, there are many absurd but uncomfortable truths in de Bernieres' portrayal of the politics of such countries (and particularly some of the generals and army leaders). Original, fresh, inspired and unforgettable - this book is a must read!
