The Dexter novels are the perfect anitdote to jaded monotonous serial killer fiction. Dexter narrates his misadventures trying to pass for normal while occasionally slicing and dicing deserving victims. As his wedding approaches Dexter finds himself investigating a disturbing series of killings and bewildered by the sudden silence of his voice. Darkly comic, cynical and wickedly warped.

The series takes a turn for the worse with this addition. The characters and relationships (as seen from Dexter's skewed perspective) are all high class. Bringing the reader in and making them invest even more with the characters. However the problem with 'Dexter In The Dark" is the plot. There really isn't one. Sure... there are a series of events leading inevitably to a climax. It just isn't a very engaging or entertaining one. I found that I spent half the time wanting to put the book down because of the plot, and the other half wanting to continue reading because I wanted to know what happens with Rita (his girlfriend) and her kids, or with Deborah (his cussing sister) and the continuation of the fallout from the previous book with Sgt. Doakes.

All in all, I find it hard to recommend for new readers, but people continuing on from the previous series may want to pick it up just as a pre-cursor to the next book in the series.

This third novel in the Dexter series introduces a supernatural element, which i thought diminished the strength of the narrative somewhat. For that reason alone I would rate this as the weakest of the three, although I have at least one friend and fan of the series who disagrees and so your view may vary. Despite that quibble, the characters continue to be well developed by Jeff Lindsay, and we get inside Dexters head to an even greater extent than before. Recommended for fans of the series.

In this poor Dexter's Dark Passenger has been scared away. I was very intrigued by this notion & was looking forward to a great read, but in the end found this book lacking....something. It didn't seem to have the same dark twisted humor as the previous two Dexter's books. I dont know if this because we don't have the Dark Passenger along for the ride. Or it could be the story line of the mythology behind the existince of the Dark Passenger's. TO ME it didn't seem to have them same drive as the others. But it did have promising bits with poor Dexter trying to teach the code of Harry to Cody & Astor. Having help from Masuka in planning Dexter's wedding & the return of Doakes. Still worth a read for any Dexter fan.
