'My name is Kinsey Millhone. I'm a private investigator, licensed by the state of California. I'm thirty-two years old, twice divorced, no kids. The day before yesterday I killed someone and the fact weighs heavily on my mind ...' When Laurence Fife was murdered, few cared. A slick divorce attorney with a reputation for ruthlessness, Fife was also rumoured to be a slippery ladies' man. Plenty of people in the picturesque Southern California town of Santa Teresa had reason to want him dead including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access and opportunity, Nikki was their number one suspect and the Jury thought so too. Eight years later and out on parole, Nikki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her husband. But the trail has gone cold and there is a chilling twist even Kinsey didn't expect ..."Skilful and ingenious". - "Irish Times". I enjoyed this book as the first in the Kinsey Millhone series. Although I had not originally started from the beginning in this series, I now find I am. When I fisrt read a Kinsey Millhone book it was around the I is for Innocent or K is for Killer, when I enjoyed both of them, I decided it was time to start at the A is for Alibi. The book is easy to read, it starts out with well described characters which are easy to picture as real people. The storylines are not too complicated but interesting and easy to follow. There is also a twist in the story that pops up all of a sudden which adds to the surprise of the ending. Whilst involving a mystery, the story also allows you to gain an insight into the main character's life and through each book I have read I now want to know more about Kinsey Millhone and where she is going to end up after the 26 letters of the alphabet and 26 books.
I enjoyed this mystery. Read it based on "Book Lust" recommendation. Sort of like a grown up Nancy Drew circa mid nineteen eighties. But Kinsey drives herself and doesn't get bloody Ned to take her everywhere, he he. OMG, how mobile phones have simplified contacting someone, in this book it's all about answering services and giving the number of the hotel, LOL, really makes one appreciate the convenience of a mobile!
