– Customer review on 15/12/2006 Ed McBain wrote tight crime novels, each of which focused primarily on the crimes the police addressed in that particular novel. The characters built up over time, as you read more of the novels. And generally he was outstanding. This one is not his best; Fat Ollie is not a very sympathetic character, and the novel he writes (the manuscript for which is stolen) is more excruciating than funny. But even when he wasn't at his best, McBain was better than the majority of crime novelists. This is worth reading.
