– Customer review on 12/02/2007 Finally, a new series with something special! ‘Dark Protector’ is the first in Alexis Morgan’s Paladin series, about a group of Immortals who come back to life after they are killed fighting the Others [demons from the Other side who can break through the barrier between their realm and ours during earthquakes, eruptions, etc]. The only problem is that each time a paladin is resuscitated he loses a little more humanity, until one day they eventually turn Other and have to be de-resuscitated by their Handler. Dr Laurel Young is the Handler for Devlin Bane, the oldest surviving Paladin. She’s attracted to him, he’s attracted to her, but a Paladin / Handler combo is a definite no-no. The thing is, after they eventually and inevitably yes-yes, Devlin’s ‘humanity’ readings improve. We don’t know why, yet. That’s obviously for later books, but I’m betting there’s a whole lifemate / soulmate thing going on, and the other Paladins have to find theirs as well. Just a guess, but it makes sense. Unfortunately for Devlin and the rest, there’s a mysterious bad guy trying to kill them. Again, the sequels will carry this plot line on. This is a well-written book, with believable characters, and an Other who will make everyone question the gray areas between the black and white of good and evil.
