– Customer review on 26/02/2007 This is the second in Morgan’s Paladin series, and is almost as good as the first, ‘Dark Protector’, which is saying something since ‘Protector’ was excellent. In ‘Defender’, Blake Trahern, the Paladin closest to turning Other, discovers that his mentor has been murdered and his friend’s daughter, who had been like a sister to him, is injured. Blake heads to the rescue, finds that Brenna no longer inspires sisterly feelings in him, and he and she head off on the road to adventure and love. Of course the road is somewhat rocky, what with assassins, rogue Regents, Others, and Brenna’s realisation that Blake isn’t quite human, but a rocky road can be very enjoyable when you’re with your soul mate . . . although when you seem him decapitate an enemy it can put a damper on things. Naturally Brenna’s kidnapped, naturally Blake is wounded, and naturally nature takes its course. You learn much more about the Others, and in fact the next book in the series is about Barak, the Other who is temporarily in residence with Devlin Bane and his Handler, Laurel Young.
