There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood. The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

This book is one of those that you could say is a bit lacking in plot, or it is stretched a little thin to get more books out of it, which will probably be just fine by the fans.
The twist here is that a group of vampire warriors protect the civilian vampires. Civilians. Fairly amusing from the depredations of the human hunters. The vampires here are rabidly hetero, boys must drink from girls, girls from boys, etc.
Also, it seems every 10 years or so there is a vampire Pon Farr, where the female goes all Vulcan sex crazy, with a bit of black widow and praying mantis thrown in. The guys agree to be victimised like this for two days straight. You don't go vampire until you are a nice, ripe sexually mature 25 either, apparently.
Anyway, to make it more clear that the fanged ones are the nice guys, the human hunters are faceless, literally soulless superhuman things called Lessers. They have this done to give them some physical advantages in combat with the fangers.
They have boss types, Omega and Mr X, just to depersonalise them some more. I think we get it now.
Basically, there are two main characters in this book, Daredevil and Elektra, fighting the faceless warriors of the Hand with the Kingpin in the background..
Oh, wait, no. It is a vampire guy called Wrath, and a female cop to become hybrid vampire woman named Beth, and the faceless warriors of the Hunters with Omega lurking in the background.
A bit light on the action, heavy on the shagging, basically. Which, presumably is the soap opera type point. A bit of setup for more action to come, hopefully, for readers of future books.
None of it got to the roll your eyes and groan romance novel point, so I guess that means the author did a good job.
I have to say that I really enjoyed this book and have found another author in paranormal romance who writes a story to get the pulse racing. It's dark, sensual and highly entertaining. If you like books about vampires, a touch of romance, some tasteful but steamy sex then this book is for you.
Awesome book. I love this whole series. These books have fantastic alpha males who are head-over heals for their women. This is the first of the series and the absolute best (in my opinion) The books are a little racey (sexually explicit) for me however I am a bit of a square. Seriously these are fantastic books. Dow yourself a favour and buy this one and make up your own mind.
J.R. Wards "Dark Lover" is the first in the "Black Dagger Brotherhood" series, and as far as debut books go has been really well written. The plot is pretty straight forward but it does a really good job of introducing you to the world of the brotherhood and all the characters. In Dark Lover we meet Wrath, the blind king who goes from being rebellious and ignorant of his duties to a reluctant sensual heroe, and Beth, half human half vampire. Daughter to Wraths best friend who on the eve of his death hand Beths care over to Wrath in preperation for her transition into vampire. Like I said the plot is pretty straight forward in this book with the usual good versus evil but the characters are superbly written and the reader gets excited about meeting them in future books. Lots of thrills, lots of steamy tasty sex and lots of fun. If you are a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon or Christine Feehan then this is a must read for you. The fantastic thing about J. R. Wards books, having read the entire series, is that every character has something completly different going on with them ensuring you never get bored and feel like you are reading the same plot over again. True romance in a thrilling dark and sensual genre. Must read series.
This is a good introduction to J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Although the plot is fairly straight forward, the novel is great for setting out the "rules" of this vampire world. Wrath is the blind king of the vampires who has long denied his place in vampire society, and Beth is the half-human daughter of one of his Brothers.
This is not the best of the series, but it does make you want to keep reading, and believe me, Ward only gets better as the series continues.
I just LOVED this book, it is about the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Vampire Warriors that are hunted by lessers the vampire hunters. Wrath is the blind warrior king, lord of the vampires, Beth's a reporter and a half-breed daughter of one of the warriors. After a promise Wrath made to Beth's father he is bond to watch over beth. Can not wait for the rest of this series to come out.
The great thing about this series is that you can read them out of order and they're still fantastic.........From the first 3 books in the series I read this last and it made me appreciate some of the story lines which had developed later on in the series (ie John/Tehrror)....My favourite aspect of all the men JR Ward writes about is their strength and commitment to their mates. The story of Beth and Wrath is no exception!! Make sure you have nothing planned when you pick this one up as you won't want to put it down!!!
This book was great, picked up on a whim, I am totally hooked on the Black Dagger Brotherhood and will definitely be reading the next three in the series.
Wrath and Beth are strong compelling characters you care about with strong connections between the other characters which you cannot wait to read their stories.
If you like Sherrilyn Kenyon you will like this book, in my opinion better than Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. Pity there are only three current books in the series with the fourth due on 15 March 2007.
Wow this book is awesome! This book is about the Black Dagger Brotherhood 'Vampires' and are hunted by lessers Vampires hunters. Wrath is a blind warrior, the Lord of all Vampires, Beth is a reporter and a orphaned half-breed daughter of one of the warriors! I brought this book as just something different to read and completly LOVED it. I can't wait for the rest of the series!
Wow this book is great! The Black Dagger Brotherhood are Vampires, hunted by the Lessers. Wrath is a great hero, Beth a fantastic heroine! I was recommended these books and have not been disappointed. I can't wait for the rest of the series! This style of writing is new to me, the fantasy/vampire style romance but man am I a convert!
