If you love Death (the character) you will love this book. As we all know Death is overworked (but not underpaid), and he decides to take on an apprentice. Mort, the lucky fellow to be apprenticed to the reaper, gets to know Death, his daughter and his servant, Albert. A thoroughly great read.
Mort is one of the classics of the Discworld series. If you just have to buy a few Pratchett books (because you can't afford them all at once), make sure that this is one of the first ones that you pick up and you won't be disappointed. Death takes on an apprentice, who comes to live with him in his world apart from worlds. Albert is as always wonderful, Death is as funny as ever, and we get to meet Death's daughter. As per usual, a great story, and some great laughs.
Death's doing a spot of matchmaking, between his new apprentice (handily named Mort, but really unnecessary to the job) and his adoptive daughter Ysabelle. However, neither of them beauty queens, they've decided not to marry for the sake of the children. however, maybe Death wasn't only looking out for his daughter's happiness.
Maybe, instead, he's sick of such a depressing job and thinks its time for Mort to inherit...
Terry Pratchett here came up with one his three best characters. Ok, he didn't make him up, but the earnest deadpan characterisation, and the use of capitalisation to signify Death speaking works wonderfully well, and is a lot of fun.
Throw in one of his other best characters, the Librarian, and guaranteed to be decent.
A seemingly useless young boy becomes Death's apprentice. Silliness and adventure ensue.
Death is probably the most popular character amongst Discworld fans. "Mort" is the first Discworld novel with Death as the central character, so it's easy to understand why this book stands amongst many reader's favourites. Although Death always makes an appearance in every other Discworld novel, it's still a treat to read about him in his own story. He has just taken on an apprentice, Mort, to help him escort the souls of the recently deceased into the next world. For most of the book, we see Mort struggle with his new job and see the beginnings of Death's interest in humanity (the living, rather than just the dead). While not as strong as the later "Reaper Man" (also featuring Death), "Mort" is still up there with Pratchett's best.
Everyone knows that Death is ever preesnt and that is particularly true of Discworld novels. Pratchett sneaks Death into ever single one of the Discworld series, and He is a stand out character in all of them. Here, he takes an apprentice with pradicatbly hilarious results...and a little romance.
It may be hard to love Death in real life but on the Discworld it is hard to find a more loveable character.
Death takes an apprentice. An early Discworld story and one of the best, Death is one of the most lovable characters Pratchett has created. Mort is sent to Death's house to learn the trade, there is also Death's adoptive daughter and some romance in the air. Hilariously funny. Highly recommended.
