A very intelligently written story. There are rarely if ever holes in John Wyndhams' stories.
Imagine a world where nearly everyone has gone blind and plants that are able to walk and silently kill are now in a war with the remaining human population to become the dominant species.
It may seem like a pretty far fetched idea, yet Wyndham manages to convince the reader that this nightmare could indeed be a reality.
An amazine book that I have re-read many times over the years.
Somehow, an astronomical event has caused the overwhelming majority of the population to become blind.
If that wasn't bad enough, mobile, dangerous plans called Triffids are able to take advantage of the disdavantage. Without sight humans are extremely vulnerable to these predators.
The narrator avoided blindness, by being in a hospital with bandaged eyes.
From there, we have an examination of this disaster scenario, and what would happen.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is one of the scariest things I have read. Wyndham takes a far-out disaster scenario and makes it absolutely realistic and believable. However I found the treatment of the main theme of the book a bit unsatisfactory. When Masen must choose whether to help the blind in the city, or abandon them as a lost cause, he pretty much plumps for the latter straight away, without it seems too much soul-searching. Obviously the character is presenting John Wyndham's own point of view here, but I found it disturbing that the author seems to have little sympathy for the opposing view point, considering it merely weak and irrational.
This book to me is well up there is War of the Worlds, A Brave New World and 1984. Its the wonderful adventure tale of how science fiction and botony combined to produce this apocalypic book. Everyone knows of the killer plants and this story is the origin of that. This book is fairly easy reading and is worth a look at by all. A killer book.
Day Of The Triifids is a compellingly apocalyptic science fiction tale from John Wyndham (who as far as I can tell only wrote apocalyptic science fiction). The narrator wakes up in hospital and discovers that he has missed the overthrow of life as he knows it by giant walking plants. Well written intelligent and rational.
Another apocalyptic novel from the pen of master John Wyndham. Bill Masen awakes & unbandages his eyes to find the bulk of the population blinded by a meteor shower. In the chaos that follows, the Triffids - huge plants with the ability to walk and to kill with a stinging lash - take over. Masen must survive - but how?
well written; an absolute classic.
John Wyndham stories are always articulate and intelligent and this is no exception.
This story is told from the perspective of a man who wakes up in hospital one morning after eye surgery to find that after a meteor shower overnight, the majority of the population of the world has been blinded. Then this strange and alien vegetation the 'triffids' start appearing everywhere. Plants that are able to uproot themselves and move. The triffids soon start killing people and our hero and any remaining unaffected people are in a race against time to save Earth itself from this terrifying space invaders.
Written in a fluent, comprehensive and imaginative style, this is top rate reading.
