Generally a well written piece involving the making of moving pictures in Holy Wood... with a fairly large part for Cut-my-own-throat Dibbler... great scene involving a large woman, climbing a tower, holding an ape....
What would Hollywood be like if it was a part of Discworld? Wonder no more with this installment of the popular series. Admire the up to the minute technology (all run by imps, of course) and marvel at the cunning and ability of one very enterprising Dibbler - oh, and the world will probably come to the end again too. Unless there is a million to one chance involved, of course, in which case things generally work out nine times out of ten.
Vincent wants to be a wizard. Actually, he doesn't want to be a wizard, he wants to continue getting the money his uncle gave him to study to be a wizard. And that means staying a student, and getting a careful mark of eighty four on every exam...
But now, suddenly he's hearing fire works in his mind. Something is calling him, and he thinks its the new craze in the discworld, moving pictures...
Pratchett chooses yet another industry to satirise, and Hollywood and the whole movie business isn't a bad choice.
A fledgling industry starts up, complete with producers, stars, and all the other hangers-on, until it is discovered that actually doing this movie thing is really, really bad for the discworld.
The Discworld has been bitten by the movie bug and everyone wants to be a star in the latest Holy Wood production. Pratchett shows he has a sharp-eye for parody of the film industry and drops in plenty of movie references for those with the inclination to look for them. Gaspode the Wonder Dog steals the show as a talking mutt, although the pedigree Laddie gets all of the heroic credit. A fantastic read.
A great little book and one of Pratchett's stand alone novels (more or less some characters pop up no matter what he is writing about, Death for instance). Its not up there with the likes of Night Watch or Going Postal but its a good fun ride regardless (its also the first time we meet Detritus the troll) and if you have ever wanted to see the movie industry ripped intot his is your book.
It's the movie industry this time. A moving picture device is invented and a new industry is born in Discworld. I especially loved the dogs - if you've ever seen a Lassie movie you have to read this book. Highly recommended for all Discworld fans and anyone looking for a good book to read.
