A great book, though not one of his Discworld series (just in case you didn't know). Following along the idea of 'The Omen', the Antichrist is born. And hilarity ensues. I love the use of dark humour in this book, and you can definitely notice the influence Gaiman had in its writing. A step away from his usual style, but not the worse off for it, Pratchett (and Gaiman) has done an awesome job on this novel.
I have a real problem with Pratchett being classified as children's or teenage fiction. All of his books have adult appeal, and this is no different! With Death denying ever having met Elvis, War sparking a battle in a bar, and a Demon and an Angel being well, very close aquaintances, this is a fantastic read! With beautifully realised characters, and the humour we've come to love, this is an absolute must have for fans of good writing.
One of my favourite Pratchett books, "Good Omens" is a hilariously irreverent, smart-mouthed and dark-edged comedy which takes a whole new look at the Book of Revelations. Populated with fresh and funny characters (my favourites being Crowley and Aziraphale, demon and angel respectively and the main protagonists), decidedly unique manifestations (including Tibetans, Atlantians and other strange creatures) and a thoroughly entertaining storyline, if you only read one Pratchett novel in your life it really should be this one!
(Although, that being said, you really should read the rest of his books as well...)
A completely brilliant novel as usual. Definitely one for the collection. 10/10!
I just love Pratchett's satirical view on society and Gaimen adds an edge to this great book. I love the offbeat view of heaven and hell given by the angel and demon who seek to guide the development of the antichrist. Laugh out loud funny. Recommended for Discworld fans and anyone looking for a good laugh at society and themselves.
Often tragically misfiled as "kid fiction", Good Omens (despite a teenage protaganist) is brilliant Grown up fiction. Neil Gaiman helps to add a trademark dark edge to a book that reads Pratchett in most parts: It screams style, satire and straight out belly laughs from start to finish.
An Angel and Demon take it upon themselves to be the self appointed Guardians of the Anti-Christ. In the interests of keeping the world in existence and avoiding the impending apocalypse, the two collaborate in the young boy's education until the day of his 12th Birthday when they realise something is not quite right...
Quotable, insightful, Discworld funny and Gaiman dark all in one. Get it.
Buy this book now!! How can you possibly go wrong with two of the greatest modern British fantasy writers in Terry Pratchett Neil Gaiman? This book is consistently funny and entertaining all the way through you will more than likely be drawn in and end up reading it in one sitting like I did. That said the book is very British and I'm sure a few of the more specific cultural references went completely over my head.
Pratchett and Gaiman are both comedic geniuses. This book is a piece of comedic genius. Pratchett and Gaimans distinct styles meld seamlessly in this book, creating something that is more than just the whole of its parts. When I first got this book I could not put it down and had to read it all. It contains a very healthy mix of Gaiman's fascination with the supernatural and Practchett's madcap humour. I only wish the two collaborated more often!
One of the funniest starts to book, ever. That is a good enough reason to read it. As far as I am concerned, this is Gaiman's best prose work, I suppose that fact that he had such talented help on the comedy front might discount that somewhat, if you do not know who actually did what. Anyway, this is often hilarious.
This is a hilarious take on the Apocalypse, following the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, who have come to a sort of agreement being stationed so close to each other by their opposing factions, and have really become friends. However, things take a turn for the worst when Crowley is given the baby Antichrist, who he's supposed to swap with the American Ambassador's newborn child. However, things go haywire and the Antichrist is placed with a normal family who live in the village of Tadfield. Eleven years later, and the signs are pointing to the end of the world; most accurately by the accurate yet hilariously garbled prophecies of Agnes Nutter, a witch who was burned 300 years ago. Aziraphale and Crowley join forces to save the world that they've come to like so much, however the Four Horsemen are already on the move, and they're going to be in so much trouble once their bosses find out...
This is a terrific book, written by two of the most talented fantasists out there, in my opinion. The pacing never flags as we follow all manner of characters who get involved in the situation, all of whom are excellently portrayed. Aziraphale and Crowley in particular are brilliant characters who you could really empathise with, and their friendship is surprisingly moving. A stand-out is the character of Adam Young, the eleven-year-old Antichrist himself, who is just perfectly portrayed. The plot is wonderfully irreverent and lovingly crafted, helped along by hilarious foot-notes and is very well-written. A brilliantly hilarious book, profound and wonderfully fun at the same time. Highly recommended.
.
Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, how could you go wrong (other than the fact that they only have about two hours a day when they are both awake)? You can't, this book is everything i had hoped for and more. While it reads more like a Pratchett book, Gaiman's quirks are still very much in evidence.
