Orwell's best known book, it's a work of good ideas and on-par writing. It's often compared to Aldous Huxley's better written Brave New World, and whilst Orwell is a better satirist and more keen social observer, the uneven quality of 1984 is apparent. It's usually forgiven because its' full of great and interesting ideas and a strong central character, but for those dipping their toe in Dystopian futures, put Brave New World in the slot above on your reading list.
this book is a real classic. it coined so many scarey phrases, such as big brother, that really makes this a real must read. it is a bit hard to understand at times, i found, but if you persevere then it will be worth it, as this book carries a really powerful message. orwell writes with such a way that you can just imagine the dark and dreary society that winston is a part of.
This novel is a must-read work of true skill and foresight. When reading it, you can see the influence Orwell has had on more recent books and films, eg. V for Vendetta. I was captured by the writing style from the first line and only got bored once. The conclusion to the story is brilliant and gets you thinking about our world...
I read this book for yr 11 and i hated it. I think mainly because it was school work and i couldnt enjoy but study every incident to the imth degree. But i have re read it, and enjoyed the way it was written. Orwell is a true genius.
this is a must read and intruguing book from george orwell, who also brought us the classic animal farm. this one tells of a totalitarian society run by "big brother" and the government, who are literally always watching the proletariats. this book can be a bit hard to get into at first, as the setting is rather dreary and comes off as a bit boring, but it is well worth the read.
Orwell's vision of the future, as depicted in the iconic '1984', has suffered through having been outstripped by technology and society. It is easy to get caught up in comparing Orwell's 1984 with our own fluoro-lit memories of that year, but don't discount this book just because of timing. It is still a brilliant novel and a great read.
A great story unfortunately ruined for entire generations of children through being made a part of the English course, the internet is full of analysis and interpretation of this novel *sigh* can't anybody simply read and just enjoy books without it seeming like homework?
Wow, this is a great book. It shows the world as it could have been - if communism hadn't been fought against, and if modernity hadn't been broken.
It is a frightning look at secret police, at a government controlling lives, at the humanity that would do such a thing to others. Human nature and political sciance combine to simitaniusly horrify and educate.
A fantastic novel revealing the world at its worst. Through Orwell's poetic description of a society dictated by fear and sadism, the reader is forced to question power, love, control and security. Still amazingly revelant even today, 1984 is a thrilling and compelling read. The protagonist is not presented as a hero, but as a human - an indecisive man simultaneously following the tide of obedience and repelling it, questioning the actions of the leaders.
There is no happy ending for the characters, but by leaving the reader with a depressing view of a society that could come about, the reader is liberated. 1984 teeters on the brink of reality and science-fiction, causing the reader to constantly consider the deeper issues and their applicability to the modern world.
this is a terrible book needlessly foisting a terrible negative view of the possible worlds in and of us... yeah yeh its orwells world war 2 berlin wall cia bleaky bleakness induced warning about totalitarianism but if you spin this sort of energy out into the inner-verses of the universes of freaked out readers where are we gonna end up... love should have conquered mate.. maybe someone could re-write the ending :-}
