Police chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy.
Now, a heated murder trial plunges the town into upheaval, and drives a wedge into a contented marriage: Cameron, aiding the prosecution in their case against Jamie, is suddenly at odds with his devoted wife, Allie -- seduced by the idea of a man so in love with his wife that he'd grant all her wishes, even her wish to end her life. And when an inexplicable attraction leads to a shocking betrayal, Allie faces the hardest questions of the heart: when does love cross the line of moral obligation? And what does it mean to truly love another?
Praised for her "personal, detail-rich style" "(Glamour)," Jodi Picoult infuses this page-turning novel with heart, warmth, and startling candor, taking readers on an unforgettable emotional journey.

after reading a couple hundred (ok maybe about eight) of jodi picoults books you start to get the feel of the general plot line that she adopts and usually come to expect a happy ending. i am sad to say that this is not her best novel, but still carries enough picoult style to pull it through. worth reading
Although not her best effort, still a Jodi Piccoult book, and that's about a good a read as you can get. You can get lost in the worlds she creates and forget about your own troubles. You know the characters intimately and can't wait to pick up the book again if you are interrupted in your reading, which is what fiction is meant to be. The characters in Mercy are a bit fuzzy, but still the story carries you along with it. It makes you think about how far you would go for someone you love...
Annoying story about a nice woman who adores her husband a small town sherrif. But he doesn't adore her and emarks on a passionate affair with her new friend. MEanwhile a man is standing trial for helping his terminally ill wife die. Moral dilemmas come thick and fast but the characters are impossible to care about and very selfish.
Having just finished reading a bit of this book i have to say i am very disappointed. I was expecting something from Jodie quite different. I found the plot concept very clever, but i just lost interest so early in the book, i only managed to read 80 pages of it before i'd had enough. Its too slow for me to get interested. However, many of her other books are excellent, so check one of those out!
This book is amazing. From the opening page Mercy grabs you and really makes you think: if you were in that situation what would you do? Picoult paints an incredibly vivid picture of the whole town, fleshing out her main characters convincingly. If you have enjoyed any of her previous books you should love this one.
