Not a bad medical thriller. Had trouble putting it down. Will be searching for other Gerritsen titles.
Along with Kathy Reichs and Jeffrey Deaver, Tess Gerritsen is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors!
Harvest is a gory and compulsive medical thriller. An idealistic young doctor seems to be heading towards everything she dreamed of, but when she decides to give a heart to a dying teenager instead of a rich woman she becomes plagued with self doubt. When another heart turns up she discovers that its records have been falsified and begins her own investigation.
This is (so far) definitely my favourite of Tess Gerritsen's earlier books, and, as it does say somewhere in there, the point where she seems to cross over from medical thriller into crime books - even though this is probably still, technically, a medical thriller. I would like to read more books with these characters in them. I think I like them as much as I like Maura and Jane! And that's saying something.
There were parts of this that might be predictable, but I don't know that that's necessarily a bad thing. The point of a book is that it should be enjoyable, and even if you think you know what's going to happen down the track a bit, so long as you still want to know, and enjoy getting there, who cares how you did? I certainly don't. I think sometimes that who-dunnit-type books where the end is a total surprise leave me wondering what on earth I've missed, that I didn't see this, or that. Were there no clues? I like clues. I like to guess. And so long as I get some of it right, a surprise or two is good! And this time I got both. I got some right, and I got a surprise or two.
The wonderful thing about Tess Gerritsen's writing is she knows what she's talking about. Tess is an MD, which makes her medical writing real. She also manages to explain to the non MD reader what her characters are talking about with out talking 'down' to you. She really is a masterful writer.
Harvest starts dark. Make no mistake about it, it is very dark in the beginning (this woman makes Poe look tame). But if you can work your way past the abused Russian orphin children being lovelessly bought and sold for who know's what (you'll find out though), it's throughly unputdownalbe.
The lead character is a strong, intelligent, professional woman who faces usual and unusual pressures in life and at work. She has a personality you'll like straight away and she makes you want to help her. Don't be fooled my the medical genre - this one's crime, suspense and thriller all the way. There are even some heart-warming bits to make you sniffle a little. It's a non-stop thrill ride and I guarentee you won't see the end coming.
This is the first book I've ever read by Tess Gerritsen but it definitely won't be my last. The author being a medical doctor made the story very realistic. She definitely knows her stuff. I just couldn't put this one down. It takes illegal organ retrieval to unprecedented levels. I highly recommend it. Now I'm off to read her second medical thriller.
Harvest by Tess Gerritsen is an outstanding novel for anybody who loves medical thrillers/mysteries. The novel is so intense, mainly because of Gerritsen's background in medicine since she has her M.D. The novel is suspenseful at several parts and keeps the reader interested the entire way through since there is not a dull moment throughout. I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in medical books. As well, it makes the reader wonder who they can and cannot trust. A book with purpose!
