Charlie Parker is still a great character, as is the assasin Louis, but its the antagonists and the side characters that make this story really good. The arachnaphiliac serail killer in this one is seriously creepy and you will never look at a recluse spider the same way again.
The books does have some downsides though, it slows down in places and there is an almost pointless side story goin on. The main reason to get intot his one though i you start to get hint of Charli parkers wider metaphysical universe and that he is not just a normal man.
A detective haunted both by the brutal murders of his wife and daughter and dark visions of the dead finds himself drawn into direct conflict with religious zealots after te discovery of mass graves. This is neo noir by the numbers with a dark supernatural element that is interesting but which threaten to overwhelm the story itself.
I thought this book was over the top in its gory detailing and the plot left a lot to be desired. I think that John Connolly lost his way with this book, taking the series into the realm of fantasy. From here on in we deal with supernatural forces and unexplained events. I found it didn't keep my attention and I yearned for the earlier books which were more thriller based.
The best of the Charlie Parker books in my opinion, this pits Charlie and his gang of misfits against possibly the creepiest bad guy I have ever read about (if you don't like spiders this is probably not the book for you). It also extends the metaphysical aspect of the series somewhat and introduces the concept of black angels (although its not clear why until the next book).
