In 1970, one of Mississippi's more colorful weekly newspapers, "The Ford County Times, went bankrupt. To the surprise and dismay of many, ownership was assumed by a 23 year-old college dropout, named Willie Traynor. The future of the paper looked grim until a young mother was brutally raped and murdered by a member of the notorious Padgitt family. Willie Traynor reported all the gruesome details, and his newspaper began to prosper. The murderer, Danny Padgitt, was tried before a packed courthouse in Clanton, Mississippi. The trial came to a startling and dramatic end when the defendant threatened revenge against the jurors if they convicted him. Nevertheless, they found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life in prison. But in Mississippi in 1970, "life" didn't necessarily mean "life," and nine years later Danny Padgitt managed to get himself paroled. He returned to Ford County, and the retribution began.

John Grisham writes another captivating book. Despite it's title their isn't as much of a legal emphasis in this book as in previous books. Its the story of Willy who takes over a newspaper in Clanton, Mississippi. Shortly after his arrival a gruesome murder occurs which he covers for the paper. After the release of the one responsible, jury members are being killed off one-by-one.
I enjoy John Grisham. His books may have similar themes, and similar characters, but I like those themes. I like those characters.
Well, some of them. Some of them are downed right horrid.
But Willie isn't. He's nice. In a funny sort of way.
He's a quiet rebel, I think. So he probably reminds me of me a bit. He makes friends with a black woman, when nobody else in his small southern town will do that. While schools are still segregated. And while the town may as well be.
I really enjoyed this book. I have read alot of his before and still enjoy them. Great plot in this one. If you want a book to read that doesn't really make you think but still keeps you hooked then this is it. A good holiday read.
John Grisham has been hailed by many as a fantastic writer in the legal thriller genre. I would agree that many of his books are stimulating and interesting to read. But if you’ve read one you’ve read them all. They follow the same blueprint time and time again. However, if you’re stuck for books or listening material they’re a good choice.
