Fortysomething small-town lawyer Ethan Brown rattles around in his life, complacent with his fianc‚e, Katie Ann, his best friend, and his dog. He handles a few legal matters, drinks his beer, savors Wordsworth's poetry, and plans his new house on his ranch. Everything runs smoothly until Annette Zeldin, a worldly concert violinist, arrives to bury her mother. With her daughter in tow, Annette is the last person Ethan thinks he should feel anything for, but her fragility and his latent knight-in-shining-armor tendencies pull the two into an affair with tragic repercussions. With a voice reminiscent of a hard-boiled detective, Richard Poe's narration is at first strikingly Sam Spade in tone, which sits oddly on Ethan's laid-back character. As the story progresses, the laconic Ethan and Poe's voice merge until they are as comfortable together as old boots. A truly wonderful, heart-wrenching tale that will resonate in the memory long after hearing it.ÄMelanie C. Duncan, Washington Memorial Lib., Macon, GA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
