This book is an economic, historical, and sociological examination of rural textile industries in the Lower Rhineland beginning in the sixteenth century and culminating with the age of factory organization in the early 1800s. Drawing on archival sources not available to English language readers, Kisch analyses the evolution of entrepreneurial innovations, the growth of a skilled labour force, and changes in institutional mechanisms and patterns of social behaviour that prepared this critical economic region for the innovation of factory production that came with the industrial revolution. |
Reviews "It would be impossible to find a recent publication more deserving of purchase by university scholars and libraries than this sophisticated study of early German industrialization."--The Historian
"Well worth reading for anyone interested in European and German economic history."--German Studies Review
"A major contribution to our knowledge of European economic history. It is based on extensive research in German sources and in its German version has already become something of a classic. It should become standard reading for students doing graduate work in German history and economic history and should be required for the large and growing number of scholars now engaged in study and discussion of the process of industrialization."--David Landes, Harvard University
