Steven Pressfield tells a stunning tale of the bravery, courage and honour of a civilization in his story of the Spartans and their stand at Thermopylae. What a man King Leonidas must have been, what a culture the Spartan culture must have been to produce men who held such ideals, displayed some discipline and devotion to one another, and espoused such physical prowess and courage. The author brings these incredible men and women to life in this superb book. The way they fought, the way they trained and the way they lived. All these combined to produce tales of the legendary battle at Thermopylae. Pressfield tells the story from the point of view of a young man training to become a warrior. A thrilling read, I think this is the best of his novels.
