It comes as no great suprise that Douglas Hofstadter's 'Godel, Escher, Bach' won the 1980 pulitzer prize for general non-fiction. While the title refers to a mathematician, an artist and a composer, Hofsatdters writing is by no means limited to these three fields. While focusing mainly on the priciples of logic Hofstadter explores many ideas in relation to art, music, linguistics, biology, chemistry and so on. In doing so we are given remarkable insight into ways in which the mind works. Both orignal works by the author and variations on the those of Lewis Carroll follow Achilles and the Tortoise as they explore Zeno's paradoxies and the like. A remarkebly well written book.
